Sharing Our Pains and Joys

Therapy is a place for tears. That is why so many people avoid it. However, they miss out on the perspective that William P. Young shares about tears: "Don't ever discount the wonder of your tears. They can be healing waters and a stream of joy. Sometimes they are the best words the heart can speak." Therapy is a place to honor the pain, to truly feel it, and it is also a place of great joy and relief. There is significant healing that happens when tears are expressed in a safe space - like in therapy. Often times, when a person finally allows themself to share their tears, I see them as allowing themself to feel, to exist without having to put up a wall. There is freedom and power in letting this small bit of water flow from you. Even with joy, we will put up a wall, to protect ourselves from being made fun of or to prevent others from visibly seeing our joy, risking it being soured. When we finally feel free to share our joy, it shines that much more brightly.

"Don't ever discount the wonder of your tears. They can be healing waters and a stream of joy. Sometimes they are the best words the heart can speak."

~ William P. Young
