Trust is Essential for Feeling Safe
It’s been a rough week for a lot of people. There are many who don’t understand that at all, but this week has had many dysregulated. If one is familiar with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, which poses that basic needs to be met before one can address higher level needs, you might resonate with Abraham Maslow’s words here: "Secrecy, censorship, dishonesty, and blocking of communication threaten all the basic needs." When the world feels shut off from you, where you can only see a constructed point of view, you feel restricted and unsafe. You end up feeling isolated and imprisoned. Some might feel those words are dramatic, but being cut off from information is threatening at a base level. Knowing and trusting your senses and the world around you is essential for feeling safe, and many don’t feel safe right now. Therapy is a sacred space offered to not have to limit your thoughts and feelings, to connect with another person knowing that secrecy doesn’t need to exist there. As a therapist, I consider it my duty to help create a protected space to explore any thoughts or feelings, where vulnerability is never a risk.
"Secrecy, censorship, dishonesty, and blocking of communication threaten all the basic needs."
