Being Noticed Helps You Live Intentionally
One of the ways that we figure out who we are is in our interactions with others. Like Aristotle said, "Friends hold a mirror up to each other; through that mirror they can see each other in ways that would not otherwise be accessible to them, and it is this mirroring that helps them improve themselves as persons." When you are similar to another person, you are able to see the deeper motivations within them and then notice them within yourself. You might even see how they hold themselves back in ways that you engage in, but you never would have seen it. When you are different, you see consider another’s point of view, helping you define yourself and how to experience the world differently. You have an easier time appreciating your own values when you see another move towards their own. Because you like this person, you also gain a respect for the individual journeys we all embark on. Even in therapy, being witnessed by another person is healing. They show you bits of yourself simply by noticing your words and reactions, allowing you room to recognizing them within yourself. When you notice yourself in the moment, you are better able to live intentionally. You become more active in deciding what you want to spend your time and energy towards. You create the version of yourself that you want to be.
"Friends hold a mirror up to each other; through that mirror they can see each other in ways that would not otherwise be accessible to them, and it is this mirroring that helps them improve themselves as persons."
