Perfectionism Hinders Growth

Growth is always pushing past your comfort zone. It is by definition becoming someone new. And that scares many people away from it. Yet, like Barbara Sher shares, "You can learn new things at any time in your life if you're willing to be a beginner. If you actually learn to like being a beginner, the whole world opens up to you." When you learn, you open yourself up to criticism, comparison, and failure. This is the fundamental problem most perfectionists struggle with. They are terrified of not knowing what to do or coming face to face with not doing something well. Living a life like that is incredibly limiting, because now growth feels threatening. In therapy, we help your relationship with growth repair, to where learning is fun, and the newness of different experiences is exciting again. We aim to get to a point where it truly feels okay to make mistakes, in fact, we might even cherish those moments.

"You can learn new things at any time in your life if you're willing to be a beginner. If you actually learn to like being a beginner, the whole world opens up to you."
