Trailblazers
Breaking cycles is hard. When people come to therapy, they often are seeking to break some form of a cycle, whether that is within themselves, or within their families. More often than not, a person finds themselves walking the same path their older family members had. Horace Mann gives a good explanation as to why being the changemaker within one’s family is hard, but also why it is important: "They who set an example make a highway. Others follow the example, because it is easier to travel on a highway than over untrodden grounds." So, why did you accidentally find yourself down the same road that your family member had gone, even though you didn’t want that? The road was already paved, and we naturally follow paths in front of us. In fact, we might feel a sense of comfort, because while you had been walking that path alongside your family when you were younger. That path is familiar and known. It takes a lot of effort and courage to create a new path. You’ll stumble upon rocks, thorns, and other barriers, as you live your life, going where no one else in your family has gone. Why do it? Maybe it is because you are creating a better path for others to follow. Or more realistically, you simply know that you didn’t like the path your family started you on, and at least you have a chance of finding a better adventure by getting off that road. Those who challenge themselves to grow become trailblazers.
